My Academic Journey

On Thursday, I was heading back to the central rail station, when I got an SMS from home. "You have a letter from the Niilo Helanter Foundation. Should I open it?". I quickly reply: "Opeeeeen it!". I wait for three seconds max, and phoned back to him. I was feeling excited and anxious at the same time. "Please say if it's positive or negative right away!" I begged. But why would they bother sending a 'no thanks' per mail.. Slowly, Jan started to read the letter. I wanted to scream of joy, but we don't do that in Finland. I had to be satisfied with crying out of happiness (quietly of course). The thing is, a grant makes you truly free. With a grant, you can go anywhere - if you like. I felt so free! Couple of weeks back, I learned something new about myself. Planning big and far motivate me the most. The spring is turning into summer and my calendar is happily filled with work trips. Today, I went to Otaniemi that is in Espoo (a city by the side of Helsinki). We had our project group meeting at the office building of VTT that is also coordinating our project. Additionally, Carter was present through Skype. It was good to have many members of the research team sitting by "the same table". Even though, I woke a 2.5 hours earlier than I'm used to, I manage to do a lot of work during the travel from Vaasa to Helsinki. Which is crucial for the next week's conference. From Helsinki, I then took a bus to Otaniemi.  After the meeting, I got a ride to Ruoholahti, Helsinki, from where I walked to the station. It is always a pleasure to visit Helsinki, my old home city. It has developed so much during the time I have lived in Vaasa (soon 6 years). Helsinki is more international than it used to be. This morning all university staff was invited to celebrate the Valentine's Day in local restaurant at 9.00 AM. Our rector hold two speeches (one in Finnish and one in English) about the Finnish traditions of 14.2. In Finland, the day is not for lovers only: it is mostly for friends and even companies tend to do something nice for their workers for that day as an act of friendship.   We had (chocolate!) cake and coffee /tee. Additionally, persons that had served the university of Vaasa a long time got rewards. One of them was my favorite mach teacher: Matti Laaksonen . It is refreshing to have special events on campus from time to time. We also had traditional lottery where all persons that are present and registered for the event can win some awesome gifts, like university products or lunch tickets. This time, our table didn't wan. Green Library. The Study Place. Second Home. The Place to Be. Viimeistä viikkoa viedään. Se on sekä surullista että ihan mukavaa, koska enää en ole jatkuvassa arvioinnissa. Takana on monta tuntia Matlabiä (kaikella rakkaudella, tuskalla ja onnistumisen riemulla), kirjallisen ilmaisun opettelua ja oman tekstin uudelleen kirjoittamista. Kun on koko ajan pitänyt muistaa jokaisen liikkeen vaikuttavan arvosanaan, on se vaan niin mukavaa, että nyt on lopultakin kaikki suoritettu. Toisaalta, opin paljon. Toisaalta olen hyvin kyllästynyt kuulemaan hokemaa: ”opin paljon”. Siispä, mitä minä opin?  Kesän alussa ohjelmointitaitoni olivat melko lähellä pyöreää nollaa, vaikka muutamaa ohjelmaa on tullut koetettua (SAS, Matlab, Eviews, STATA,…), mutta keskittyminen on näissä ollut aina datan käsittelyssä ja tilastotieteellisissä ominaisuuksissa. Nyt osaan kirjoittaa melko simppeleitä koodeja (käyttäen if-else if-else/end, for loop, while loop …), ymmärrän miten tärkeää koodin komm...

Oletko sinä ikinä kuullut pankin "routing number"-termistä? Minä en ainakaan ollut. Stanford käyttää ensisijaisesti ePay järjestelmää lukukausimaksujen vastaanottamiseen. Siispä minäkin yritin! "Fiksuna" likkana googletin asian ja löysin Nordealle vastaavan luvun New Yorkin toimipisteeseen. Tietenkin olin löytäny monta lähdettä, jotka tukivat tätä johtopäätöstä. No, okei, niitä oli tasan kaksi. Ajattelin, että "sama yritys se ainakin on, pakko sen on olla tuo.." Tänään kävi ilmi, että eipäs ollutkaan! Enkä näin ollen ollutkaan maksanut ensimmäistä lukukausimaksuerää. Huuupsii:( Tuloksena overdue maksua vuokrasta, onneksi muilta osin maksuaikaa on vielä jäljellä. Soitin (lopultakin) pankkiin ja kysyin tuota Routing numeroa.  Kävi ilmi, ettei Nordealla edes ole sitä. Olin aina kuvitellut, että Nordea on se kaikista kansainvälisin. Pienellä surffailulla löytysin onneksi tyypilliset pankkitiedot Stanfordilta ja maksu hoitui normaalilla "maksu ulk...
